DIY stars and stripes high-waisted shorts

I may just be speaking for myself, but I own about half a million pairs of high-waisted 'mom jeans'.
As much as I think these beauties will always have a place in my heart, I no longer think they belong on my butt.  However, high-waisted shorts are right up my alley, and just a few snips away.  I've been looking for a little something special to wear to LA over fourth of July this year, and I think I've found it.

Need something festive to show your pride?

I may just be speaking for myself, but I own about half a million pairs of high-waisted 'mom jeans'. As much as I think these beauties will always have a place in my heart, I no longer think they belong on my butt.  However, high-waisted shorts are right up my alley, and just a few snips away.  I've been looking for a little something special to wear to LA over fourth of July this year, and I think I've found it.

These are very simple, so I apologize in advance for a lack of step-by-step photos.

First things first, cut off the ends of your pants, so as to turn them into shorts.  My warning is to cut long the first few times - you can always go back and cut more off later.  Think of it like a permanent haircut.

Begin to tape up your stripes using painters tape.  Be careful to stick your tape all the way down so that your paint won't seep underneath it.  The stars are a little trickier, I honestly recommend using star stickers.  Had  I had some on hand, I would have saved hours of work.  I cut my shining beauties out.  One-by-one.  With Duck tape.  Use stickers.

I highly recommend the dye that I used.  It was by a company called s.e.i.  Essentially, it was spray on.  You spray.  Air dry.  Tumble dry in your home drier.  I'll be curious to see how the dye holds up to washing, but so far the color looks bright and bold.  Because of the nature of spray dye - DO IT OUTSIDE.

If you make flag shorts, please comment below, I'd love to see!

    1. Aww, thanks!! I wore them out to sushi last night, and everybody was staring! I couldn't figure out if it was because I looked chic, or ridiculous. Maybe both!
